By combining her sport psychology skills with her clinical skill and personal experiences as an athlete, Susan helps individuals optimize performance in all areas of their lives. Her strong interest in athletic performance enhancement grew out of her eight years of competitive cycling. In 2001, Susan was involved in a disabling bike accident, sustaining a head and multiple orthopedic injuries. Following the accident, she felt highly vulnerable to re-injury and suffered chronic pain. Fear of sustaining a second head injury caused a lack of confidence on the bike. Through personal mental performance work, she learned to manage her pain and fear and returned to competitive cycling.
Ms. Farber is highly trained in cognitive / behavioral and dynamically oriented therapies. With this expertise, she’s able to add a deeper dimension to classic sports psychology techniques like visualization and guided imagery. Susan helps athletes become aware of underlying core beliefs that serve as a basis for negative self-talk and limited performance. By helping athletes discover their core beliefs, they learn to figuratively ‘clean house’, keeping only those beliefs that serve and enhance performance. Susan then helps athletes achieve their goals through many effective, specifically-tailored, guided imagery and relaxation techniques.
Thanks to Ms. Farber’s work as a psychotherapist in a neuro-cognitive rehabilitation center, she also brings valuable insight into the psychological aspects of recovery from injury and knows the emotional and highly stressful toll it can take on any athlete. Susan’s mind/body approach and clinical experience in adjustment counseling offers the necessary support and motivation needed to manage the rehabilitation process much more successfully.
